What Is Meta

“Meta” has two main meanings: it can refer to the American technology company, Meta Platforms, formerly known as Facebook, Inc.; or, in English, it can describe something that is self-aware, self-referential, or commenting on itself or its own category. For example, a book about a book or a joke about jokes could be described as “meta”.  

Meta as the company 

• What it is: Meta Platforms is a technology conglomerate that owns and operates well-known platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. 
• What it does: The company is focused on building the future of human connection and is investing heavily in the “metaverse,” a concept of a persistent, shared virtual space.
